PLANNED MAINTENANCE & SHUTDOWN SUPPORT

Check It Off Your Shutdown List.

Less to coordinate. More confidence going into shutdown.

A planned shutdown is your opportunity to address equipment problems that can’t be resolved during normal production. But with limited time and competing priorities, deciding what to repair, replace, or source ahead of time can be challenging.

From recurring pump failures and mechanical seal issues to replacement equipment and parts requirements, The Walling Company can help you evaluate your options before your shutdown window begins.

Why do our mechanical seals keep failing on the same pumps?

Repeated mechanical seal failures can indicate an issue beyond the seal itself. Shaft movement, misalignment, vibration, dry running, and unsuitable seal materials can all contribute to premature failure. In ethanol production, fluid temperature, solids content, and operating conditions can make sealing especially challenging. Reviewing the pump, seal arrangement, and failure history together can help identify potential causes before another replacement is made.

Why are our stillage or slurry pumps wearing out so quickly?

Stillage and other solids-bearing process streams can accelerate wear on impellers, casings, and other wetted components. Excessive velocity, abrasive solids, unsuitable materials, or operation away from the pump's preferred operating range may contribute to shorter equipment life. Reviewing the application, pump selection, materials of construction, and wear patterns can help determine whether repair, component changes, or a different pump configuration would be more appropriate.

Why does our transfer pump keep losing flow or struggling to keep up with production?

Reduced flow can result from worn internal components, suction restrictions, air entering the system, changes in fluid properties, or operating conditions that no longer match the pump's original selection. For diaphragm pumps, air supply problems, worn diaphragms, or check-valve issues can also affect performance. Identifying the pump type, fluid characteristics, and symptoms helps narrow down the likely causes.

Why do we keep replacing bearings or experiencing excessive pump vibration?

Recurring bearing failures and vibration can be associated with misalignment, imbalance, lubrication problems, pipe strain, cavitation, or operation outside the pump's intended range. Replacing a bearing without investigating the underlying condition may lead to another failure. Vibration analysis, alignment checks, balancing, and equipment inspection can help identify potential contributing factors.

Our pump keeps needing repairs. When does replacement make more sense?

Frequent repairs don't automatically mean a pump needs replacing. The decision depends on equipment condition, repair history, parts availability, efficiency, operating requirements, and the cost of continued downtime. If the application has changed or the pump consistently operates outside its intended conditions, replacement or re-selection may offer a more sustainable solution than repeating the same repairs.

How can we reduce the risk of unexpected pump failures between planned shutdowns?

Start by identifying equipment with recurring failures, increasing vibration, leakage, declining performance, or a history of premature wear. Condition monitoring, appropriate maintenance, alignment checks, and reviewing critical spare-part requirements can help identify developing issues. For equipment that repeatedly causes problems, evaluating the application and repair history may reveal opportunities for longer-term improvement.
